Samantha Lavin is a Grade 12 Student and Music Department Head at York House School. Within school, she plays the trumpet in the Senior Concert Band and sings as a Soprano 1 in Ragazza, an auditioned vocal jazz choir. Outside of school, she has competed in the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals four times and has recently been nominated as the Provincial representative for Intermediate Musical Theatre. She obtained her ARCT Piano Performer’s Diploma with First Class Honours in 2012 and received the 2014 Gold Medal for the highest mark on the Grade 8 Royal Conservatory of Music Classical Voice Examination in British Columbia. Samantha has just recently taken her Grade 10 RCM Classical Voice Examination in June. Samantha has recently been contracted to sing a series of original art songs written by a rising composer. She will be recording another original art song from the series this summer. Samantha has been accepted to UBC’s Sauder School of Business as a Chancellor’s Scholar, and is hoping to combine her passion for opera performance and business into a future career. Samantha is incredibly grateful for the opportunities and encouragement that the York House School Music Department has given her over her past thirteen years at York House School.
What learning music means to me:
For many years, music has been a creative outlet in my rigorous academic schedule. Through music, I have been immersed in the realms of collaborative and professional musicianship and I have been able to develop my self-confidence. When I was exposed to the exquisiteness of opera at the age of 14, I was immediately captivated by the finesse, patience and dedication that it required. Opera has allowed me to overcome the raw honesty and vulnerability of singing in front of others. Taking risks in music performance has given me the opportunity to create a positive environment for my growth.
I am not only truly honoured, but also humbled to have received this NUFSICISUM award. The Music Department at York House School has played a substantial role in the development of my self-identity and my leadership skills. It has been a great privilege to be able to contribute to the YHS Music Department.
